    How does a Well Water Level Meter Work?

    The Working Principle of a Well Water Level Meter

    The water level change measurement system mainly consists of two parts: the underground material buried part and the ground receiving instrument. The two cooperate with each other to achieve accurate measurement of the water level. ​

    The underground material buried part needs to be purchased separately, including the water level pipe and the bottom cover. The water level pipe is made of PVC engineering plastics and is divided into main pipes and connecting pipes. The inner diameter of the main pipe is Φ45mm, and the outer diameter is Φ53mm㎜. The inner diameter of the connecting pipe is Φ53mm, and the outer diameter is Φ63mm. It is put on the main pipe joint to connect and fix. There are four rows of Φ7mm holes on the wall of the main pipe to facilitate water to enter the pipe. When buried, the geotextile should be wrapped around the main pipe and fixed to play a filtering role. The bottom cover is made of injection molding technology and installed at the bottom and top of the water level pipe. It can effectively prevent mud and foreign matter from entering the pipe to avoid affecting the measurement.​


    The ground receiving instrument is a steel ruler water level gauge, which consists of a probe, a steel ruler cable, a receiving system, and a winding reel. The probe is made of stainless steel, and a water-resistant contact point is installed inside. When it touches the water surface, the receiving system will be connected, and it will automatically shut down when it leaves the water surface. The steel ruler cable part combines the steel ruler and the wire into one through plastic technology, which not only prevents the steel ruler from rusting but also makes the operation easier and the measurement and reading more convenient and accurate. The receiving system consists of a sounder and a peak indicator. The sounder has a buzzer that emits a continuous buzzing sound, and the peak indicator is the pointer indication of the voltmeter, which can be selected by a toggle switch, and the measurement and reading accuracy of the two methods are consistent. The winding reel consists of a winding disc and a bracket. The receiving system and the battery are placed in the core cavity of the winding reel, and the steel ruler cable is wound outside the cavity. ​


    This measurement and reading system realizes the accurate measurement and reading of water level changes through the coordinated work of the underground material buried part and the ground receiving instrument, and has important application value in water conservancy projects, geological monitoring, and other fields.

    Correct Operation Method of Well Water Level Meter

    When measuring, loosen the locking screw behind the winding reel, let the winding reel rotate freely, press the power button (power indicator light on), put the probe into the water level pipe, hold the steel ruler cable, and let the probe move slowly downward. When the contact of the probe touches the water surface, the sounder of the receiving system will emit a continuous buzzing sound. At this time, read the depth dimension of the steel ruler cable at the depth of the pipe mouth, which is the distance of the groundwater level from the pipe mouth.

    If the beep is not audible when measuring in a noisy environment, the peak indication can be used instead. Just turn the selection switch on the instrument panel to the voltage block. The measurement method is the same as above. The measurement accuracy at this time is the same as the accuracy measured by the sounder.

    Users must pay attention to two points when measuring:

    When the contact of the probe touches the water surface, the sounder will make a sound, or the voltmeter will immediately indicate. At this time, the steel ruler cable should be slowly retracted and released to carefully find the exact position of the pronunciation or indication moment, and then read the depth dimension of the point from the orifice. The accuracy of the reading depends on the timely determination of the starting position of the peak sound or indication. The accuracy of the measurement is related to the proficiency of the operator, so repeated practice and operation are required.

    Daily Maintenance Methods for Well Water Level Meter

    To ensure the performance and service life of the water level tester, please turn off the power immediately after each measurement to save power. When replacing the battery, you must first release the steel ruler cable completely and remove the front panel. After use, be sure to clean and neatly wind the steel ruler cable and store it properly in the cabinet. The probe must be kept sealed during operation. It is strictly forbidden to disassemble it. It should be handled with care to avoid vibration. At the same time, be careful not to bend the steel ruler cable, especially near the probe.
